Martenitsa

февруари 21, 2010

Martenitsa is an accessory that Bulgarian people wear during the month of March according to an ancient tradition. The red and white are the classical colors for the martenitsa. Red is a symbol of health and white of happiness. At the end of March or at the sight of stork martenitsas are put on trees or in fields in hope for more fruit and better harvest.

Often martenitsa are shaped a couple – one female called Penda and one male called Pizho. Martenitsas are popular with kids and adults and bring a lot of color to the spring in Bulgaria. Below is my Martenitsa embroidery.

ноември 22, 2009

Just finished this one. The grid on the canvas reminded me of some flowers on a net pictures that I made in the summer. So I decided it is a perfect time to share those.

This is my neighborhood church. It was built one year ago. The icons inside are brand new, but made in the Eastern Orthodox traditions. Mixed with the views from the church are my needlepoint icons.

Hissar Kapia – The Gate of the Fortress

септември 7, 2009

IMG_2981
I made this needlepoint work by request of my daughter who lives in the USA. She wanted some Bulgarian old houses to remind her of her native country. Hissar Kapia is a symbol of Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
Here is photo I took at Hissar Kapia last week – for you to match the canvas with the actual historical site.
IMG_3280a
The gate exists on this place from deep antiquity. Below the level of the street pavement are located the old foundations, dating back from Roman times /2nd century/ and a remake from 12th-14th centuries. During the Renaissance the gate was reconstructed and was saved from collapse.
